John Michael Perryman Sentenced to Life in Prison Without Parole for Brutal Beating of His Grandmother

District Attorney Daryl Bailey announced today that John Michael Perryman has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the brutal beating death of his grandmother, Evelyn Perryman. He was convicted of Capital Murder after a weeklong trial in July before Judge James Anderson, who imposed the sentence today.

District Attorney Bailey said: “Let this sentence serve as yet another warning to the violent criminals in this community that your actions will not be tolerated. Law enforcement, my office, and our judges take violent crime very seriously and we will continue to work together to remove you from our streets for the rest of your life. I appreciate Judge Anderson’s sentence as well as the hard work of the Montgomery Police Department. These kinds of sentences are exactly what we need to improve Montgomery and make it the best city it can be.”

Evidence at trial showed Perryman broke into his grandmother’s house on the night of June 14, 2019, and bludgeoned her to death with a large metal object. He then took money from her wallet and fled the scene in her car. Mrs. Perryman was found dead the next day around lunch when her daughter went to her house to check on her. Patrol officers responded and found a back window broken and the victim deceased in her kitchen. The victim’s car was located later that day in an apartment complex near Walmart on Eastern Boulevard. The defendant was taken into custody at the store and gave a statement to law enforcement denying any involvement in his grandmother’s murder.

Investigators were able to locate video of Perryman getting off a MATS bus in the victim’s neighborhood on the night she was killed. Eyewitnesses also saw Perryman going into his grandmother’s house and leaving in her car.

DA Bailey expressed his appreciation to Deputy District Attorneys Ben McGough, Katie Langer and Samantha Sizemore for their work on the case. He also thanked the Montgomery Police Department as well as District Attorney Investigators Antony Shannon, Mark Lanicci, and Andrew Magnus and Peyton “Max” Holloway for their tireless efforts in the investigation and prosecution of the case.
